Teaching Diverstiy

In my EDEL 100 class we were learning about teaching diversity in the classroom. We learned that you should not think of having a diverse class as a bad thing, but as a good thing. Having a student from a different culture can be an advantage for you and your students. The student from a different culture can teach you and the other students about their culture and their different customs. The article I found is about a teacher that makes has her students make an art project that shows their culture. This project is directed towards kindergarten and first grade students. They are given construction paper and wide variety of art supplies. with these supplies they choose the color of their skin and add all their facial features. When they are done, they have a self portrait of them-self that shows how they are different than everyone else. I think this a great project to get your students introduced to diversity.

  1. Yay education! Diversity is such a HUGE subject in education. It's even one of the INTASC standards (yay?). In my cadet teaching class, we had learned SO MUCH about freaking diversity and then we had to write a lesson plan based on it. It's a fun subject!
